Though this may rarely come up directly, variations within a species makes the species in general more believable to exist in canon. To phrase it simply, variations within a species are slight alterations made to a general species based off where one location of the species is located. Such variations, for example, can be found in humans, hence different races exist. Variations exist in ponies as well, obviously as Earth Pony, Pegasus, and Unicorn, and this is based off their individual needs as a species variation. I'm here to propose variations in other species, like Griffins. For example, my character, Revontulet, is a griffin, specifically a Northern-Mountainous Griffin. A brief physical description of this species is that thier fur and feathers are a snow white (used as camouflage in hunting and hiding) and they have mostly fur (in order to keep warm). They have larger lungs compared to other griffins and also have larger talons (for staying attached to an object in case of frequent high winds.) More variations I have in mind can follow the pattern of [Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western]-[Mountainous, Sahara, Fielded, Oceanic] but others are free to add on to this pattern.

This is a fascinating idea! Evidence of microevolution is, indeed, a great method for increasing the credibility of a species. You know, there should be a species codex on here somewhere, eh?

Thank you! I think a species codex would be useful on here too, just to compile all the species everyone has and to just give newcomers a little inspiration, y'know?
